About

Thank you for stopping by! I hope my website will help you get started in the aquarium hobby.

I’ve been keeping fish, since I was a kid. After 20 years of ups and downs, today I still enjoy this amazing hobby.

Over the years I’ve kept guppies, mollies, platies, bettas, angelfish, various catfish, cichlids and other fish species.

Here is the full list of freshwater species I cover on this website:

I’ve created SmartAquariumGuide to share my knowledge and experience about fish-keeping that I’ve accumulated over the years. I try to cover every aspect of the hobby, both freshwater and salt water.

If you are new to keeping fish, I highly recommend reading my guide on the nitrogen cycle. It is the first lesson you should learn before starting a fish tank.

Once you understand how an closed aquarium ecosystem works, you can start setting up your first aquarium.

You also want to consider some hardy, beginner fish to start out with. Until you learn how to maintain your aquarium, I don’t recommend buying any sensitive fish.

Starting a new fish tank shouldn’t be hard. Most people fail, because they have no idea how an aquarium works. Once you get rolling, it will be a lot of fun. You will only realize, after your fifth aquarium, that you are actually addicted to keeping fish.
